Multi Disciplinary Research unit(MRU)

Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit (MRU) is a project under the Department of Health Research / Indian Council of Medical Research, Government of India. Government of India, in June 2013, approved the scheme for ‘Establishment of Multi-disciplinary Research Units (MRUs) in the Government Medical Colleges/Research Institutions’ during the 12th Plan period. It is a path breaking initiative to develop/strengthen the health research infrastructure in the country to fulfill the newly allocated function of the Department related to “Promotion, Coordination and Development of Basic, Applied and Clinical Research”.
OBJECTIVE OF THE SCHEME:
The objectives of the present scheme are to:

  1. Encourage and strengthen an environment of research in medical colleges.
  2. Bridge the gap in the infrastructure which is inhibiting health research in the Medical Colleges by assisting them to establish multidisciplinary research facilities with a view to improving the health research and health services.
  3. To ensure the geographical spread of health research infrastructure, in order to cover un-served and under-served Medical Colleges and other institutions.
  4. To improve the overall health status of the population by creating evidence-based application of diagnostic procedures/processes/methods.

MRU at HIMS
"Research is creating new knowledge" -Neil Armstrong
In the present scenario, India's share in the medical research is far behind that of many other countries, and the research output in various subfields of medicine from India is not integrated well into International research. Understanding such lag in medical research in our country made Indian Council Medical Research (ICMR) to kick start a novel initiative of forming research centers in different medical colleges to encourage medical research and also to dilute the barrier between researcher and medical practitioner. Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit (MRU) at HIMS, Hassan, is one such initiative that was incepted as per Department of Health Research and Indian Council Medical Research guidelines in the year 2013.
While the Vision of MRU is to promote and encourage quality medical research in the Institution, the mission is to provide A-Z gateway for research, to take care of all aspects of research planning, research projects administration, research documentation, and providing centralized sophisticated equipment facility. MRU undertakes research in non-communicable diseases. As per the guidance given by DHR/ICMR, MRU has constituted a local Research Advisory Committee (RAC) which comprises both internal and external senior faculty members and research scientists. Under the extensive effort and guidance of the above members, MRU has stood out as one of the pioneering medical research wing among other initiatives started by ICMR. The major objective of MRU is to focus on bridging the gap in existing infrastructure and promoting and strengthening the research environment in Medical Institution. Researchers at MRU also provide technical support as well assist in grant applications to different granting bodies. The overarching goal of MRU is to improve overall health status of the population by creating evidence-based application of diagnostic procedures/processes/methods with emphasis on geographical and regional needs. Well qualified researchers with highest qualifications in MRU have the motivation of fostering original research and to inculcate ethical and moral values among medical researchers.
Researchers at MRU, HIMS, are instrumental in setting up a state of the art infrastructure which is equipped with all the need based equipments necessary to carry out the high-end research. The impregnated broad and holistic view of the Institute will assure the commitment of MRU to pursue excellence in research and to build capacities in health-related research that paves the way for a successful medical research story in India.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF MRU:

    • To undertake research in non-communicable diseases and other need-based research as recommended by the Local Research Advisory Committee.
    • To promote and encourage quality medical research in the Institution.
